Last Day at Couture Show - thoughts

It is now Tuesday night and we are back in Florida. Yesterday was the final day of the show. The day went smoothly and the break down after the show went well.
The difficult thing for me to communicate in this blog is the more personal, emotional side of the show. If you know me then it is easy to read between my lines and see my concerns, worries, nervousness. But for those of you reading this, I am afraid I have left out a huge part of the show experience. I’ll try to share it with you, without embarrassing myself!
Exhibiting at a BIG show for the first time is very intimidating. I should have written that in ALL CAPS! Regardless of the size; whether 200-300 exhibitors at Couture or 2000-3000 at JCK, These show are THE BIGS. So, that’s where we start …major intimidation.
This intimidation comes from a few different places. First, is the whole concept of getting ready for the show; the preparation at home, the travel there and then the setting up. As you stand at your booth that set up day and look around you at the other exhibitors, you get nervous. Do I have enough displays? Does my case look nice? What do I display? And the list goes on.
Once you get things set up and you have finally decided that you can’t tweek the showcase anymore and the show is about to open to buyers, you take a breath. If you are lucky to have a friend, co-worker or helper with you (if you are really luck, that person is all three!!!), you can stretch your legs and walk around the show. It is a good way to get display ideas and to completely deflate any sense of confidence you mustered during set up! Seriously!
I am serious! That first day I crawled back to my booth, tail between my legs. Thank goodness for Jessica and Maria who stood me up and turned me around and showed me my beautiful display case! Phew! I learned not to compare myself or my jewelry to other designers. Well, I learned day by day.
Ok, so the nervous jitters started to subside. I have to say that a lot of this was due to our neighbors. I cannot say that this wouldn’t have happened if i was in some other location but I am soo happy I was where I was. Not only did I know ABOUT the two women I was placed between but they were Amazing! Friendly, helpful and funny. Both women were smart, talented and savvy. It was a treat, an honor and a great learning experience.
Once I got over the fact that lots of other people make really gorgeous jewelry, I was able to enjoy their designs and start coveting a few pieces!!! Everyone I met was wonderful. Some were a bit conservative, a bit reserved. Others were flamboyant and excited. There were lots right in the middle and I enjoyed meeting each and every one.
When I think about our last day there I think mostly about my fellow exhibitors. The friendships that were created will hopefully last a long time.
Ok, enough mushy stuff. On a business side, we met some great new retailers and wrote some new business. It was a great show and we look forward to coming back next year.

Day Two of the Couture Show in Las Vegas...
Wow, Day Two is Opening Day here at the show. Our case is ready, our jewelry is laid out and we are ready to sell sell sell!

Day Three at the Couture SHow in Las Vegas...
It has been a great day here in Las Vegas! We were very busy and had lots of retailers stop by and inquire about our jewelry! We wrote a few orders and I think we have picked up 3 new stores! YEA! It is great to see what pieces are getting the most attention and the over-all feedback is very positive. A wonderful 3rd day and we hear that Saturdays are even busier than fridays! Looking forward to that.
Tonight we are taking the kids to see Blue Man Group and I cant wait to see how they like that!

I couldnt ask for a better day! It’s my birthday and I have been showered with flowers, well wishes and lovely gifts! I am a lucky woman!
Saturday has ended up being a little slower than everyone expected, but we did write 2 nice orders which brightened the day even more. We are hoping to get the attention of some of our “wish list” stores tomorrow, wish me luck!
Had a great Birthday dinner tonight with Jay, Jessica, Maria and Meredith. A wonderful way to end a great Birthday day!

Addedum to Day One

Ok, I was trying to be all business in my first Las Vegas entry but I have to take a moment to thank two awesome ladies... Jessica and Maria! They both continue to amazing me; Jessica and her organization, fantastic spirit and her ability to make my life sooooooooooooo much easier! Not sure what I am going to do without her while she is off galavanting in Europe but I know for sure she will be missed!! As the scatter brained designer it is a dream to have someone keep everyone in order and I am grateful!

And Woman! Maria Woman! Now, I have always admired her; her business mind, her energy and her drive, but to see her focusing on "my business" is inspiring and exciting!! Her curiosity and approach to the jewelry world is refreshing and she picks up on stuff I would never have even noticed!! I love it and am honored and thrilled that she is here and I am hoping to need her working with me now and in the years to come!!!

Ok, thank you. Just needed to share that!

Las Vegas Couture show at the Wynn- Day One

Las Vegas, Day One

Yesterday was move in day at the Couture Show. Everyone had their boxes and crates and were busy readying the insides of their showcases. Although we are new at this, I felt that things went really well. We brought some cork squares to cut to shape and covered the bottom of our 6’ showcase. We felt pretty prepared. Our booth neighbors are really nice and sooo talented!! We are right next to Melissa Joy Manning, I love her work!

After set up and a quick meeting with my awesome diamond guy I was off to meet my family for dinner! A needed break that got me ready for a business dinner meeting later on. The kids were having fun exploring the hotel and I was grateful to my husband, Eliza and Cynthia for keeping them all entertained!

After a quick bite of amazing pasta from Mario Batali’s restaurant “Otto” it was off to a wonderful dinner meeting with the ladies from Veranda Magazine. Great conversation and delicious food.

Back to the Hotel and I was off to bed!!

Today is our first official day and we start setting up the jewelry at 7:30am. Very excited, a bit nervous and looking forward to every minute!!

Stay tuned for next edition …

The Rough side of Beauty

The Rough side of Beauty

As a lapidary, I certainly appreciate a well cut or uniquely cut gemstone. The art of taking a rough stone and shaping, cutting and polishing it is just that, an art. And I respect those who do it well and with passion.

But as a Rockhound, there is something about the natural form of gemstones, fossils, crystals and other materials found in Mother Nature that really excites me.

During my last trip to the Tucson Shows I purchased two Spessartite Garnet clusters. Despite the hundreds of stones in the case, my eyes went to them immediately. The beauty and complexity of their structure intrigued me and I could already see the design in my mind.

That same day I found some other amazing stones, all with their natural characteristics intact; a stunning piece of Lapis, roughly polished but not shaped, some shaped pieces of Schist with Pyrite crystals potruding right out of the middle and some exquisite Stalactite slices, revealing the intricate layering of minerals trapped inside.

My mission was made clear that day and I set out to create my Pachamama Collection, in honor of the Earth and with gratitude to the beauty I have the priveledge to create with.

With these amazing natrual elements I strive to create a balance of rough, natural material with cut and polished stones all set within a clean, simple setting of either 22k, 18k gold or Sterling Silver.

The best of both worlds coming together in a beautiful tribute to nature, to be worn close to your heart.

Introducing the Pachamama Collection

Pamela Huizenga introduces a new collection of unique, one-of-a-kind pendants.
The PACHAMAMA COLLECTION by jeweler Pamela Huizenga celebrates the special beauty of essentially pure gemstones and crystals.  Named after Pachamama, who is revered as the benevolent deity “Mother Earth” by the indigenous people of the Andes, these creations focus on the most unusual of stones, from fossils and stalactites to natural crystal formations.  Incorporating such singular jewels as rose cut diamonds and uncut sapphires, Pamela has fashioned pendants that honor these natural elements. A talisman from Mother Nature to wear close to your heart.
These pieces join Pamela’s growing selection of exquisite jewelry, paying tribute to the rare combination of beauty and imperfection found in gemstones.  A trained lapidarist since her teen years, this new pendant collection appropriately highlights the innate power of these stunning stones and shows off Pamela’s extraordinary technique and passion for her materials and work.
Pamela Huizenga Jewelry will be on display at the esteemed Couture 2011 trade show in Las Vegas, June 2-6.

Getting ready for the Big Show

Getting ready for the Big Show
Today, we finished up putting new, typed tags on all the jewelry. A much more professional look compared to the hand written ones that were on before.
All the bracelets are laid out, the earrings placed neatly in their holder and the pendants finding homes in their trays compartments. It is all coming together.
Getting ready for a big trade show is a lot of work … getting the jewelry ready, making sure you have all the displays sorted out; what to bring, what not to bring. You don’t want to forget something but then you don’t want to bring 10 steamer trunks to the show!
Tomorrow we lay out how we want to display the jewelry in the showcase. That will help us decide what goes into under stock and what gets to be in the display. This will be fun and difficult all at the same time since that means some pieces will have to sit and wait under the counter! I’ll have to play favorites!
We are also putting together our little give-away, our bags as well as pouches for any items that get sold at the show. Then we have to remember business cards, invoices, calculators, make-up, deodorant and comfy shoes!!
SO much fun and excitement!!!
Stay tuned for some more photos …

Music in the Pamela Huizenga studio

It's funny how different music is helpful for different activities. When I am in a design slump and need to get the creative juices flowing I like powerful, edgy music. Music with meaning and provokes emotion ... I usually turn to Blue October or P!nk ...

But today was a numbers day, nothing creative at all. I actually had to force creative thoughts out of my mind and focus on math ... yuck. For this type of activity I need calming, soothing music ... So today was a Pavarotti,  Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. It was a productive day but I look forward to getting back to the rocks, gems, fossils and designs!

News from the Studio

Some News from the Studio ...

As an artist, I enjoy being surrounded by my materials; rough stones, polished stones, mineral specimens, metals and fossils. They inspire me and keep me focused.

However, when I can no longer find room on the work table to design a piece I know its time to tidy up, clean off the work space and get organized. This happens before each major design session. All the loose material gets put back into its spot; usually one of the many little yellow boxes tightly lined up on my tables. Well, some of the boxes are little, then there is medium and then some big ones. I have two 6' tables filled with these boxes and I am running out of room. The yellow boxes have taken over and seem to be multiplying on their own.

Then there is the huge collection of beads I have amassed over the years that is no longer accessible in my studio, the cases are stacked on wire shelves and then a table is in front of the shelves. Photos, drawings and other inspirations are pinned to a cork board and are no longer decipherable. Supplies, files and displays are neatly shoved into the closet and are almost dangerous to retrieve!

Jessica, who does all my photography, is stuffed into a little corner of her office with all the light boxes, lighting and tripods ... and somehow still manages to get great shots!

I have come to the conclusion that yes, it is time to move the studio!
And the daunting task of finding the right space loomed in front of me ... I was not looking forward to it.

You know how sometimes things happen perfectly, almost just to prove you wrong? I always chuckle when the universe plays with me like that, like a teasing older sibling. I may get annoyed with the teasing but pleased with the outcome!  We looked for 1 day and looked at 2 spaces. I think the first place we looked at existed only to show us how lucky we were to see the 2nd place! Space number 2 was perfect! Individual rooms so we can separate activities; one room for stones cutting and all the messy work, another room for the beads and the jewelers bench and then a room just for designing and photography. There is even a space for all that pesky paperwork and computer stuff!

We will have an entire wall to organize jewelry displays and boxes! And there is even a little front room for the showcases. It is a wonderful set up and we cant wait to move!

So, if you try to call me over the next 2 weeks and I seem a bit distracted, it is because we are moving the studio into the perfect space and I am still chuckling with the universe!
